The year is winding up and it has been a very busy term.
On Friday the children will be having a pool fun day. They have 45 minutes at 11 to play in the swimming pool. Appropriate water toys are allowed!
On Tuesday (December 13th) Room 13 will have a class party. We ask that each child bring a plate of finger food to share with the class. We will be singing Christmas carols and we invite parents to join us in celebrating a year of hard work! On Tuesday the students will also be meeting their new teacher for 2012. Of course Wednesday (December 14) will be our last day of school for the year.
Merry Christmas to you all and thank you for your support this year!

The Big Event
Room 13 are very excited for the upcoming "BIG EVENT". Our second adopted team is Ireland because they have been training at Mt Smart stadium. You will see lots of green supporters flags and banners in our school. Go Ireland! Go All Blacks!
Safe Practise when travelling to an event
Use safe practise when crossing the road.
Look both ways before you cross. If you didn’t look both ways then you could get hurt. This safe practise is telling you to check both ways.
Always cross in a safe place. If you don’t cross in a safe place then cars might not see you and you could get run over. This safe practise is telling you to cross in safe places.
Check for sneaky driveways. If you don’t watch out for sneaky driveways then cars may reverse into you.
Walk quickly across the roads. If we didn’t walk quickly across the road then you might trip or fall over and a car may not see you and you will get hurt.
Safety is important to everyone because if everyone just runs across the road then we would get hurt. My idea is we could all wear bright coloured vests when travelling to an event so the cars can see us.

Safe Travel to an Event
When travelling to an event you should look left and right when you are crossing the road because there might be a car coming and it could run you over.
Don’t run but walk because cars might be coming there first. If you run you might fall over and hurt yourself.
It is a good idea to always wear something bright when you are crossing the road otherwise cars might not see you when you are crossing the road.

Cross in a safe place so you do not get hurt. If you cannot find a safe spot do not cross so find a safe place to cross!
In the future if people run across the road people would get hurt.
It would be safer people had signs or bright cards. The cards could be in the cars and the signs on signposts.

Horrid Head lice
Head lice are ectoparasites. They need human blood to live on it is called a host.
the cycle of a march butterfly
A butterfly doesent start off as a butterfly it starts off as a little tiny egg. Then the caterpillar hatches out of its egg. When it was inside the little tiny egg under a leaf it ate yolk.To turn into a monarch butterfly the baby caterpillar has to eat alot of leaves to get fat.Thenit curls up under a leaf it turns into a pupa. After afew days you can see the monarch butterflies pattern on the pupa. Then a butterfly comes out of the pupa.A butterfly needs a antennae so they can look for other female butterflies.
Rainbow Butterflies
Butterflies are colourful, bright and rainbowish. They are sometimes small and sometimes big.
The antennae helps them to smell and find female butterflies. They use their compound eyes to protect their self or stay away from predotars.Their proboscus is for them to suck nectar from flowers. The probocus is a straw that can roll up and down.
They have four wings. The wings are for them to fly.The veins go in their wings.Their veins are for their body to be straight and strong.
Butterflies live in cabbige gardens or in swan plants. It dosen't come out in Autumn or Winter because it is too cold.It comes in the middle of the day.
The butterflies lays an egg first. The eggs are under a leaf so it can't be seen. After its a egg it turns into a caterpillar then a pupa then a chrysails and last of all a buterflyThe butter fly lays an egg then it starts all over again.
Buterflies are insects that can fly.

Eric Carle Butterflies
Room 13 have looked at the art work of Eric Carle. He uses collage to create the illustrations in his books like the famous 'Very Hungry Caterpillar.' This is Eric Carle's butterfly....
Inspired by Eric Carle's butterfly we are busy making our own butterfly art. We discussed how he uses contrasting colours to make his butterfly stand out. We will post photos of our finished art!
Congratulations
Congratulations to our two Duffy winners this week:
Bradley for excellent topic work
and

Topic
Here are some photographs of the monarch caterpillars we have been looking after in our classroom. They ate so many leaves that our swan plant was left bare! Now they are ready to move on to the pupa stage of their life cycle. They have spun silk and attached themselves to the plant.

Welcome to term 2. This term our topic is change. We are examining insects and their life cycle. The first insect we have been looking at is the butterfly. We have already learnt so much we didn't know about butterflies and cannot wait to share our butterfly reports with you.
For physical education we are fortunate to have coaches from the YMCA coming in on a Tuesday to teach us large ball skills. The first three sessions will be focussed on developing soccer skills so please remember to wear appropriate shoes!
For maths we have been learning our 2, 3, 5 and 10 timestables.
For the past 3 weeks we have been lucky to have Miss Van Rixel from AUT working with us. Tomorrow is her last day and we will be sad to say goodbye to her.
Stay posted for photos and work samples that will be posted soon!

Recount Writing
This term Room 13 have been focussing on recount writing. We are working hard to make sure that our stories are interesting for our audience.
These are the things we are thinking about:
Going Shopping by Micheal 7 years old
One day, I went to the Warehouse. I asked my mum if I could look at the toys. I insisted. I... saw a Nerf gun. It was the fastest shooter. It is like a machine gun. I went back to my mum and I announced to her that I wanted the best Nerf gun ever! Then my mum had an awkward face. She said "yes." I was satisfied!!!
Moaning Sister by Meipera 7 years old
When I went shopping my sister was moaning because she wanted a lolly. She asked my mum and she shouted "no!" She kept asking my mum but she said "no." I had money and she asked me but I wanted to buy myself a lolly so I bought myself a lolly at the counter. She asked my mum "can I have a lolly?" My mum replied "ok then..." I laughed at my sister when we left the shop. My sister got really angry at me and my mum. She went red, so red that she was made out of fire. I grew up. I went with my mum and ofcourse my sister and dad. I was laughing in the car almost all the way home. My mum bought milk and bread. My sister says "you can get milk and bread but don't buy me a lolly!"
These are the things we are thinking about:
- using adjectives
- adding detail
- using interesting words
- long and short sentences
- different sentence starters
- similies and metaphors
